My recent visit to the Philippines was both a professional and personal eye-opener. Having spent most of my career running operations in Accounting firms, I have been accustomed to more traditional service delivery models and team structures. This was my first opportunity to experience a large-scale BPO and outsourcing environment from the inside, and it gave me a completely new perspective on what makes these organisations successful.

From the moment I arrived, I was struck by the energy of the Philippines. The country is youthful, vibrant, welcoming and full of ambition. While the traffic in Cebu certainly has a reputation of its own, so too does the warmth and friendliness of the people. Beyond the business agenda, I enjoyed experiencing some local Filipino cuisine and the genuine hospitality that makes visitors feel immediately at home.

The highlight of the trip, however, was meeting the people behind VBP's success. With approximately 1,500 team members spread across three offices in the Philippines, the scale of the operation is impressive. During my visit, I had the opportunity to spend time in two of those offices in Cebu and meet with segment heads, managers and team members across the business, particularly within the accounting, bookkeeping and training teams.

Coming from a professional services background, I arrived with some preconceived ideas about outsourcing. What I witnessed challenged many of those assumptions. Rather than simply providing additional capacity, VBP has built an environment that emphasises leadership, capability development and long-term career growth. The professionalism of the teams, the structure of the training programs and the focus on continuous improvement were evident throughout every discussion.

What stood out most was the enthusiasm people have for their work and their careers. Conversations regularly centred on development opportunities, training initiatives and future career pathways. It was encouraging to hear positive feedback from teams and to see some of my initial plans and initiatives beginning to take shape and gain support from the local teams they are designed to assist. There was a clear sense of pride in the work being delivered and a genuine commitment to both personal and professional growth.

The visit reinforced something that applies to every successful organisation, regardless of industry or location: great outcomes are driven by great people. Talent, supported by strong leadership, ongoing learning, and a clear sense of purpose, creates the foundation for exceptional client service.

Seeing firsthand how VBP invests in its people gave me a deeper appreciation of how businesses can successfully scale through the right partnership. When organisations have access to skilled professionals who are supported by structured training, career development opportunities, and a strong culture, they gain far more than additional resources, they gain an extension of their team.

While I understood the value outsourcing can bring to creating additional capacity, this visit gave me a deeper appreciation of its broader potential. What I saw firsthand was an opportunity for firms to build scalable teams, invest in capability, and create the capacity needed to focus on higher-value work and better client outcomes.

For accounting firms navigating talent shortages, increasing compliance demands, and growth ambitions, outsourcing is no longer simply a staffing solution. When built around skilled people, strong training, and a shared culture, it can become a genuine extension of the firm and a powerful driver of long-term success.

As more firms look for ways to scale without compromising quality or culture, the right outsourcing partnership can make all the difference. Discover how VBP supports businesses with skilled professionals, structured development and a commitment to long-term success.
